Prescribed Fires Benefit Wildlife the Centerville-Washington Park District

Prescribed Fires Benefit Wildlife The Centerville-Washington Park District will be conducting prescribed burns of prairie/meadow habitats to benefit the plant and wildlife diversity in area parks. The Ohio Department of Forestry supports and promotes the use of prescribed fires as a safe, sustainable, and effective way to control invasive plant species, promote growth of native prairie species, and improve wildlife habitat. Prescribed fires further promote safe, sustainable practices by reducing chemical applications that would be used for the control of invasive species in our parks. The Ohio Department of Forestry and the Ohio EPA have approved a flexible burn schedule between March 1 - April 30, 2019, at Yankee, Bill Yeck and Grant Parks. This flexible schedule will provide a better opportunity to complete burn activities around unpredictable spring weather. Justin Bates, Park Operations Technician III, will be the acting Certified Prescribed Fire Manager on site, and will oversee trained staff and volunteers for all burn activities. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about Prescribe Fire Management in our parks, please contact Justin Bates at (937) 433-5155, or jbates@cwpd.org.
